The short video clip is all about the story of success of a young girl living in a poor family with only her mother on her side. The video is casted and filmed by Thai actors and actresses. It is a 3 minutes and 1 second video that would definitely inspire someone watching it in how to achieve your goals or dreams in life without coming from a rich and successful family. With the help of simple innovation and the right guidance of a person. Anyone could beat poverty and could even be a successful person.
But before taking you everyone to the story, let us talk about how the setting of the short video clip which is the country of Thailand. The country is not as rich as the other first world countries like United States of America, Qatar or United Arab Emirate. Thailand is in fact a poor country relying in agriculture for their economy growth just like here in the Philippines. And speaking of Thailand is just like Philippines, poverty is also present in this country. The is a huge of numbers of family that is included to group of poor family. In spite of this, Thailand became an upper middle income economy in 2011. Notwithstanding political uncertainty and volatility since 1970,Thailand has made remarkable progress in social and economic issues, moving from a low income country to an upper-income country in less than a generation. As such, Thailand has been one of the widely cited development success stories, with sustained strong growth and impressive poverty reduction, particularly in the 1980s.
Thailand's high economic growth at 8-9 percent per year during the late 1980s and early 1990s was interrupted by the "Asian Crisis" of 1997-1998. Since then, economic growth has been moderate, with period of robust growth, such as at around 5 percent from 2002 to 2007, followed by the fall-out from the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, the flood in 2011, and the impact of political tensions and uncertainty in 2010 and again in 2013-2015. As a result, economic growth in Thailand has lagged that in both low and middle income East Asian neighboring countries in recent years. In addition, such comparatively slower growth reflects the decline in global demand for Thailand’s key exports such as hard drive disks and partly because of domestic factors including slowdown in government spending and withdrawal of consumption stimulus measures. Growth was 0.7 percent in 2014 and is projected to rebound to 3.5 percent in 2015.
Thailand is likely to meet most of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on an aggregate basis. Maternal mortality and under-five mortality rates have been greatly reduced and more than 97 percent of the population, both in the urban and rural areas, now have access to clean water and sanitation. At the same time, there are concerns about environmental sustainability.
Poverty in Thailand is primarily a rural phenomenon, with over 80 percent of the country's 7.3 million poor living in rural areas (as of 2013). Some regions—particularly the North and Northeast—and some ethnic groups lag greatly behind others, and the benefits of economic success have not been shared equally, especially between Bangkok, Thailand’s largest urban area, and the rest of the country. Income inequality and lack of equal opportunities have persisted. Income inequality, as measured by the Gini coefficient, has fallen in recent years, but stays consistently high.
The facts that I stated above all came from the from The World Bank. Now let us move to the story. The story starts from this poor family consisting of a mother and her little daughter. The mother raises her little girl by herself. She has not finished studying in a school and fed her family by selling pineapples in the streets. By the way if you do not know what a pineapple is, I will include here the facts about the pineapple from the Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia. The pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a tropical plant with edible multiple-fruit consisting of coalesced berries, and the most economically significant plant in the Bromeliacae family. Pineapples may be cultivated from a crown cutting of the fruit, possibly flowering in 20–24 months and fruiting in the following six months. Pineapple does not ripen significantly post-harvest.
Pineapples can be consumed fresh, cooked, juiced, and preserved, and are found in a wide array of cuisines . In addition to consumption, the pineapple leaves are used to produce the textile fiber piña in the Philippines, commonly used as the material for the men's Barongtagalog and women's Baro't saya formal wear in the country. The fiber is also used as a component for wallpaper and other furnishings. The word "pineapple" in English was first recorded in 1398, when it was originally used to describe the reproductive organs of conifer trees (now termed pine cones). The term "pine cone" for the reproductive organ of conifer trees was first recorded in 1694. When European explorers discovered this tropical fruit in the Americas, they called them "pineapples" (first so referenced in 1664 due to resemblance to what is now known as the pine cone).
In the scientific binomial Ananas comosus, ananas, the original name of the fruit, comes from the Tupi wordnanas, meaning "excellent fruit", as recorded by Andre Thevet in 1555, and comosus, "tufted", refers to the stem of the fruit. Other members of the Ananas genusare often called "pine", as well, in other languages. In Spanish, pineapples are called piña ("pine cone"), or ananá (ananás) (example, the piñ colada drink).
The flesh and juice of the pineapple are used in cuisines around the world. In many tropical countries, pineapple is prepared, and sold on roadsides as a snack. It is sold whole, or in halves with a stick inserted. Whole, cored slices with a cherry in the middle are a common garnish on hams in the West. Chunks of pineapple are used in desserts such as fruit salad, as well as in some savory dishes, including pizza toppings and a grilled ring on a hamburger. Crushed pineapple is used in yogurt, jam, sweets, and ice cream. The juice of the pineapple is served as a beverage, and is also as a main ingredient in such cocktails as the piña colada.
Going back to the story, The mother of the child raises her by selling fruits that already peeled and sliced and ready to eat. But selling fruits in the street is not enough to give her and her child a comfortable life. The child understands their status in their living and always glad to help her mother in slicing and peeling the fruits they have for them to sell on the street. The child has small hands and lacking in strength cannot help her mother in slicing and peeling the fruit. One day as they were peeling and slicing the fruit they need to sell. The girl always do what she always do, she helped her mother. The little girl took a whole pineapple and tried to cut it by herself. But her strength would not be enough for her to cut it. The mother also took a pineapple and cut it not saying anything to her little, but she wanted to show his daughter by giving an example in how to cut the fruit. From there, the child saw it and followed how did her mother cut the pineapple correctly. The mother just smiled because she is glad that her daughter is interested in learning things. The mother always believes that to teach a child a lesson, it should be taught by giving and example.
I agree in how the mother showed his daughter an example to teach her a lesson. Most of the parents to teach her child a lesson by forcing the child to learn in. But in this story, if you just let the child move and tried to learn by his or her curiosity, it would easily teach them the lesson they wanted to learn. You cannot force a child to learn something if he or she is not interested to it.
If you wanted to be successful in your life, you should learn from the examples of successful people. You do not want to follow the examples of unsuccessful people or you will also end up living a poor life. You should learn it from yourself. Nobody can teach you in becoming successful but you should learn it from yourself. As most of the people say, "experience is the best teacher". All the best lessons in life are all learned from the experience. Schools and teachers are just guide in the learning process but in the end, when you are outside the real world where struggles and hardship is always present, learning from your mistakes and accepting the challenge to achieve the right result you wanted. From there you can say the experience taught you in how to overcome a challenge in your life.
I could also affirm this based on my experience in my practicum. I am an IT student and is having my On the Job Training (OJT) in the summer of 2015. Me and my colleagues is searching for a company that would let us have our OJT sessions. We are accepted to work in Twidl Inc., a company that are developing website and mobiles apps. When we about to start our first day in our job, many things come to my mind and I was not in ease. I was thinking if I could cope up with the task that I am about to do or if I was knowledgeable enough. But I said to myself that I have studied hard in our school which is the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) and that would be enough to cope up with the challenges in working that company. But then, I was wrong. I am shocked in the method that they used in developing their websites. Almost everything there is new to me. It seems like I have started from scratch again and the lessons that they taught me in school seems useless. There I realized that learning process does not end in graduating in college. The real challenge is out there in the outside world and best learning that you can get is by exposing yourself in the outside and start learning from your experience.
Back in the story, after the scene in the short clip where the mother taught the child by example in cutting a pineapple. As I have said, they earn their living by selling sliced and peeled fruits. Their income may not be enough but the mother still able to send her little girl school because the mother thinks that education is very important in a person's life. After school, the little girl saw a man selling ice cream in a popsicle stick. Children crowded the vendor trying to buy an ice cream for themselves. The little girl just stood by and watched the children scramble to get an ice cream. She really wanted to buy one but she does not have any money to get one ice cream for her. She felt sad and envied the children who can afford the ice cream. The mother saw this and felt sad because she does not have any income yet from selling fruit and could not give her daughter the money to buy an ice cream.
This part of the story shows the status of their living. But despite of this, the mother sends her little daughter to school. The mother knows that education is very important to a person's life. When I started thinking about why education is so important, I remembered my high school years, my teachers, school subjects, the study and the fun. I never really hated school. But I have seen many of my peers who hated going to school; I have had some friends who did not like the idea of studying. Some needed to be up in summer school for recovery. I personally was always focused because I wanted to become an IT expert. I know it will be hard and very challenging. However I believe I can handle the challenge.
The first thing that strikes me about education is knowledge gain. Education gives us a knowledge of the world around us and changes it into something better. It develops in us a perspective of looking at life. It helps us build opinions and have points of view on things in life. People debate over the subject of whether education is the only thing that gives knowledge. Some say education is the process of gaining information about the surrounding world while knowledge is something very different. They are right. But then again, information cannot be converted into knowledge without education. Education makes us capable of interpreting things, among other things. It is not just about lessons in textbooks. It is about the lessons of life. One thing I wish I can do is, to provide education for all: no child left behind and change the world for good.
Lack of money or resources should not be a hindrance in attaining a quality education. In the story, the mother does not deprive her little girl in acquiring an education for herself. A parent should be the one responsible for sending his or her daughter to school. In the story, the mother herself does not have his own proper education so she do not want her little girl end up like her, a person who did not achieve a proper and well established education. Education is something a anyone cannot steal from you.
The mother in the story felt bad because she cannot even give her daughter an ice cream. A parent is always sensitive in how their sons or daughters feels. So the mother came up with her own idea. When they went back home, the mother sliced a pineapple in a rectangular shape. The shape looks like the ice cream that her daughter wanted to buy. After cutting the pineapple, she puts a popsicle stick in the rectangular shaped pineapple and then put it in a cooler with lots of ice so I can be cold as an ice cream.
The morning after, she gave it to her little daughter and the little girl was so delighted that even though it is not an ice cream, at least it looks like an ice cream for her. The little girl was so thankful because her mother put on an effort in finding a way to give her something based on their resources available. The mother asked her little girl if it tastes better than ice cream and the little girl replied that it is better than the ice cream sold.
In this part of the short video, from the inability of the mother to provide an ice cream for her daughter, she finds a way to make up with that inability. Just like every parent do. Even though they have less resources, a loving parent always finds a way to give their child at least the leisure as a child. This is how parents think and act because of their love for their children despite of lacking in terms of financial resources. We should always appreciate what every parent gives us even though it is not the best, but it may be all they have got and from their you can tell on how much sacrifice a parent could do for their child. The mother shows innovativeness in this part of the video. Cutting the pineapple into an ice cream shaped and putting popsicle may be simple, but from this simple innovation, there is a huge impact when you show it to a child.
When the mother gave his child the pineapple ice cream, the child found it delightful and asked her mother why would not they sell it. That idea from the little girl struck something in the mind of her mother. She was surprised on how her little girl thinks. At early age, the daughter wants to help her mother in earning money so it can help them in their daily needs. Besides, selling the pineapple ice cream they the mother made is not a bad idea at all.
In the young age, the child already thinks like a business woman, she came up with a good idea in selling their pineapple ice cream. Besides, they have all the resources they wanted in starting a small business for a child. From here, I would like to show an article on how to start a business from www.bplans.com.
Every time I think about the topic of “starting a business,” I recall a book I read years ago: “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway.”
To my mind, it’s fear of the unknown that holds most of us back and not the thought of whether we’re competent enough or intelligent enough or whatever else we feel is needed to run a business.
As with anything, learning to manage, be the boss, and run a business are just things that happen over time and with practice.
So, as I see it, getting started is more of a pep talk than a to-do list.
Beyond this list, I encourage you to read about running and managing a business every day. If you’re not sure where to get started in terms of reading, take a look at our list of business blogs you should be reading but probably aren't and the list of books we encourage you to start working through.
1. You can do it because others are doing it. Think the country is dominated by big businesses run by people with MBAs? Wrong.99 percent of business in the us are small businesses, and they employ 80 percent of the population! You don’t need any “special” training to run a business. You just need an idea, the desire to learn and adapt, and the ability to take action!
2. You can do it because there is a business appropriate for just about everyone’s interests, experience, passions or expertise. “Starting a business” really only comes down to figuring out your business idea doing your paperwork, and sorting out the money. Given the number of funding resources available today, you shouldn’t have too much of a problem getting that initial start up cash, especially if you focus on a lean business model or MVP route to market.
3. You can do it even if you start from home. According to the SBA, 52 percent of all small businesses are home-based and of the 28 million small businesses in the U.S., 22 million of those are operated by people who consider themselves self-employed (they have no employees and no additional payroll).
4. You get tax benefits. Oh yes. This even applies to freelancers. Depending on the type of business you register as, you could write off a number of your expenses including travel, telephone bills, food, portions of repayments on things like cars, and so on. And, depending on the business you start, there may also be various government incentives. If you’re unsure about what to do and how to register, I strongly advise speaking with your accountant about the tax benefits you could be eligible for.
5. And the one I consider most important—you get to do what you want, when you want, the way you want. This is an opportunity to give the things you do meaning and to add value in the places where it matters to you. For example, Palo Alto Software focuses primarily on helping small businesses realize their dreams of starting a business.
Based on the article above, you can observe that all of these are actual facts that happened in our short video. The actually fit in how the mother and daughter started their pineapple ice cream. So to continue the story, the agreed in selling the pineapple ice cream. The mother made some more pineapple ice cream to sell. As usual she cut it into to rectangular shape put it in the cooler with ice. The mother then gave the cooler to her little. She let her little daughter sell the pineapple for herself. The little girl accepted the challenge and started to sell her pineapple ice cream. She went out and sells her pineapple ice cream but then, nobody even noticed her and what she is selling. Time passed so she went home. When the little girl is already at home, she showed her mother her cooler and the mother can see all of the pineapple ice cream soaked in water from the ice that melted inside the cooler. The daughter asked her mother why she failed in her business and the mother replied that people buy their needs in the market, so she should sell her pineapple ice cream in the market.
This part of the short video show us how the little girl failed for the first time in her business. By the look in the face of the little girl, you can tell that she is disappointed. But before we continue I would like to show you another article that contributes to the factors in failing in a business. The article came from www.businessknowhow.com
If you start your business for these reasons, you'll have a better chance at entrepreneurial success:
· You have a passion and love for what you'll be doing, and strongly believe -- based on educated study and investigation -- that your product or service would fulfill a real need in the marketplace.
· You are physically fit and possess the needed mental stamina to withstand potential challenges. Often overlooked, less-than-robust health has been responsible for more than a few bankruptcies.
· You have drive, determination, patience and a positive attitude. When others throw in the towel, you are more determined than ever.
· Failures don't defeat you. You learn from your mistakes, and use these lessons to succeed the next time around. Head, SBA economist, noted that studies of successful business owners showed they attributed much of their success to "building on earlier failures;" on using failures as a "learning process."
· You thrive on independence, and are skilled at taking charge when a creative or intelligent solution is needed. This is especially important when under strict time constraints.
· You like -- if not love -- your fellow man, and show this in your honesty, integrity, and interactions with others. You get along with and can deal with all different types of individuals.
On the other hand, failure in following the reasons in starting a business might result into a business failure.
Based on the short video, the factor that contributed to the failure of the business of the little girl is the "location" of her business. I would like to add an additional article from www.businessknowhow.com
location is critical to the success of your business. Whereas a good business location may enable a struggling business to ultimately survive and thrive, a bad location could spell disaster to even the best-managed enterprise.
Some factors to consider:
· Where your customers are
· Traffic, accessibility, parking and lighting
· Location of competitors
· Condition and safety of building
· Local incentive programs for business start-ups in specific targeted areas
· The history, community flavor and receptiveness to a new business at a prospective site
In the real life, failures may come. The thing is when you fail at a certain thing, you should not stop striving for success. If you fail, just pick yourself up, dust yourself off. Life is not always about success because we are not perfect individuals and that is a good thing. Challenges and failure in life are the world's best teacher. If you experience failure, you expect that you taught yourself something new. Why have you failed? Is the question that come to your mind directly. Remember that failure is part of the business and in the life of a person. These factor should always be considered. How would you redeem you self in such failures determines what kind of person you are.
If at first you do not succeed there is always a second, third and many tries to make in order to succeed. Nobody said that success is easy. You can only gain success if you work hard and smart. You should always consider that things that happen why you failed the previous attempt and start making your adjustments.
In every failure, there is a lesson learned. Finding the good in the bad is important. A person should always be optimistic in what is happening in his journey to success. You failed, you have learned you lessons, try harder and do not make the same mistakes again. Staying depressed after failure instead of trying again is not good. According to NBA Legend Michael Jordan, "I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't help not trying". Failure does not mean it is the end, quitting does.
Back in the story, these factor actually affects the success of a business. In the story, the mother is aware of this factor because not by education but from her experience in selling fruits in the street. A marketplace is a good place to sell which is where she told her daughter to sell her pineapple ice cream. Her daughter went to the market place. When she reached the market, she saw lots of people selling and buying their goods. What she observed is that every vendor has his/her own sign that shows what they sell and the price of their product. This gave the little girl an idea on what to do. So she ran back home and started making her own business sign. After that, she made her own batch of pineapple ice cream sliced it by herself and put some ice in the cooler ready again to sell. This time, the little girl's destination is the market. With the little confidence, she started selling her pineapple ice cream to people in the market. The people noticed her product because of its uniqueness and they liked it. Because of this, the little girl strived more and continued to sell her pineapple ice cream. The little girl later had his own bicycle to help her sell pineapple ice cream. Her mother was so proud on what her little girl achieved and said to herself "Someday when I'm not around. I know that she will be just fine".
Couple of years later, Her daughter graduated from college as scholar.
I am partly intrigued in this part of the story because of the reason that letting a little girl go to a market that lots of people and usually are strangers is a good idea. Letting the girl learn her lesson on her own and leaving her in a market can be a double-edged sword. It can help the little girl or it can be the cause of jeopardizing the safety of the kid. I think the kid is too young to do that kind of work especially in a huge market place. But anyways it turned out to be fine because nothing happened to her.
Success is Perhaps the most important realization that an individual can make in their quest for personal growth is that there is no single formula that defines the path to personal success. We all have different goals and priorities, which mean that different activities and attitudes will make us feel good about ourselves. So how is it that we can define success for each individual based upon his or her natural strengths and weaknesses as well as inherited personality type? To be successful is to understand what is important to you, to recognize your weaknesses without hiding behind them, to strive for balance as well as open new doors in life. Each personality type has views on what it is that makes them successful.
Often, many people state their views of success based on what someone else’s idea of what it is to be successful. However, among all these ideas of what it is to be successful a common idea is drawn. Successful means being able to understand what is important to you. If we spend our time and effort trying to meet somebody else's idea of success, and ignore or belittle any of our contrasting views, then we will find ourselves exhausted and unhappy. One cannot be successful until they have reached this mindset of happiness; it is not possible for one to be successful unless they are happy with their goals and achievements. Successfulness is the ability to understand what goals you strive for in life, and prioritizing so that you are able to achieve them. Realizing what is truly important to us is a major step towards achieving personal success. Personal success can be had when one knows their limitations. Being successful means recognizing our weaknesses without hiding behind them. To be successful one must discover who they are as a person and whether or not they make decisions based on thinking or on feelings.
The mother in the story is now very confident because she knew that her child has learned a lot of things because of her experience. Nothing makes a parent the happiest when she seeing her child reaching his/her dreams and becoming a successful and good person. The world taught the little girl a lot about life. It made the girl strived harder in order to live a better life. Her success is the fruit of all her hard work, perseverance and sacrifice. They never saw their status in life in dreaming and working hard for them to them to reach their goals in life.
Every person should always think that poverty is not a hindrance in becoming successful. Everyone has a shot of becoming the next superstar or becoming rich. Bill Gates said "If you are born poor, it's not your mistake. But if you die poor, it's your mistake.". Having your own success story does not mean you have to imitate what other successful people do. Your life is different and so are theirs, you should find your own way to reach your dreams. According to martial artist Bruce Lee "Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it."
